Abstract
Objective:
The goal of this study was to evaluate the current information about benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) among Eastern province population in Saudi Arabia, including risk factors, symptoms, and complications, as well as diagnostic, preventative, and treatment strategies.
Methods:
From May to June 2022, a cross-sectional study was performed in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia that utilized a pre-tested and validated questionnaire. The study included 471 adult males aged ≥20 years.
Results:
Participants' general understanding and knowledge of BPH was low, particularly among younger men, which revealed that majority (69.4%) of the participants had poor knowledge, 17.2% had moderate knowledge, and 13.4% had good knowledge of BPH. Majority of the participants (98.5%) were Saudi nationals, with a significant portion (32.5%) falling in the age range of 41-50 years. Majority of the participants (78.6%) were married, and nearly half (47.3%) held bachelor's degrees. In terms of residence, the highest percentage (43.9%) lived in Al-Dammam, followed by Al-Ahsa (31.4%) and Al-Qatif (17.4%). Occupationally, 32.3% worked in the field, 25.5% were office workers, 17.6% were healthcare workers, 14% were unemployed, and 10.6% were students. Most participants expressed a desire to learn more about BPH, its risk factors, methods of diagnosis, prevention, and therapy.
Conclusion:
Participants' awareness of BPH was poor. Awareness programs and campaigns should focus on proper education strategies regarding BPH, its risk factors, prevention, and efficient treatment modalities. Proactive counseling strategies should be given, particularly among older males.

Key words: Benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate gland, Lower urinary tract symptoms knowledge, risk factors
