Abstract
Background: Depression is one of the most prevalent psychiatric diseases, manifesting through a variety of mental and physical symptoms such as restless sleep, loss of interest, low mood, exhaustion, and attention issues. This study aims to determine the prevalence of depression among medical students at Qassim University (QU) and Imam Abdulrahman University (IAU).

Methods: An online survey was used to assess the prevalence of depression among 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year medical students at QU and IAU in Saudi Arabia. The survey included the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a validated tool for measuring depression severity.

Results: This study investigated depression risk factors among medical students in Saudi Arabia. In QU, a higher GPA (≥4) was associated with a significantly lower likelihood of depression (84.2% less likely). In IAU, while no factors were significant at the stricter p<0.05 level, being male and in the 3rd academic year were associated with a lower risk of depression (45.9% and 56.6% less likely, respectively) when p<0.10 was considered.

Conclusions: This study examined depression among medical students in two universities, revealing high prevalence rates at both QU and IAU. The study suggests that university-specific factors influence depression, with female students potentially at the greatest risk. Academic performance appears to be protective, and GPA was a significant predictor of lower depression risk in QU. The relationship between academic year and depression varied across universities, highlighting the potential impact of the academic environment on student stress and depression. Further research is needed to better understand the complex relationship between depression and various factors.

Key words: Depression, medical students, Qassim university, Imam bin faisal university.
