Abstract
Background: This prospective cohort study aims to assess the impact of comprehensive dental treatments provided by undergraduate dental students on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients attending dental clinics. Additionally, the study aims to evaluate differences in the perception of OHRQoL based on gender and age.
Methods: All adult patients seeking comprehensive dental treatments at dental students’ clinics during the academic year 2022-2023 at Taibah University, Saudi Arabia, were twice asked to complete the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) in Arabic. This was supplemented with a general question about their quality of life (QoL), administered before treatment completion and at least two weeks after.
Results: After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 47 patients (22 males and 25 females) with an age range of 16 to 56 years completed pre- and post-operative questionnaires. The mean age was 33.2 years, with a standard deviation of 10.4. A significant improvement was observed in all aspects of OHIP-14 and the general question (p-value <0.001). No significant differences between genders were found, and no significant correlation between age and OHIP-14 scores was identified.
Conclusion: Comprehensive dental treatments performed by undergraduates significantly improved the OHRQoL of patients. Gender and age did not influence the perception of OHRQoL. Routine use of a general question about OHRQoL can effectively assess OHRQoL, with scores ≥2/4 warranting further investigation. A larger, multi-center study is necessary to confirm these findings.
