Management of Periradicular Lesions Using Herbs; A Case Report

Shatha Alqudaimi.

Abstract
Background: Herbal products are gaining popularity in dental and medical practice nowadays. Myrrh is a popular herbal compound that has been commonly used to treat a variety of inflammatory conditions for centuries. It is orally biocompatible and is known to have antimicrobial properties. Herein, we aim to document and discuss the successful use of myrrh therapy in managing a periradicular lesion (PDL).
Case presentation: In October 2019, an 18-year-old female with pain was admitted to our clinic. Periapical x-ray shows large radiopacity#21. The plan was to reschedule the patient after the holiday for retreatment and endodontic surgery. However, as time managed, we reassured the patient, prescribed a killer, and advised her to use Murrah mouthwash. She used Murrah mouthwash once daily for two weeks. In November 2019, during the recall visit, a new X-ray showed the disappearance of the white lesion, pain, and pressure. The plan changed to conventional treatment, and there was no indication for surgery. In March 2021, after 15 months, recall showed good healing and formation of PDL with no signs and symptoms, which indicates case success.
Conclusions: This case report indicated that the response to myrrh therapy was successful but should be used cautiously since prolonged use can be toxic.

Key words: Periradicular lesion, Herbal medicine, Myrrh.
