Effect of cigarette smoking on semen parameters: a systematic review

Abstract
The smoke from cigarettes contains various components, but the major compounds that affect health include nicotine, carbon monoxide, and tar. Tobacco smoking is an increasing global problem despite its well-known adverse effects on health. Smoking primarily impacts the lungs; however, it also causes various other serious health hazards, including effects on reproductive health, regardless of gender. Cigarette smoking contributes to the high prevalence of infertility among males and lowers sperm quality. The present review is aimed at identifying the influence of smoking on semen parameters by reviewing previous research on this subject. The search process was conducted using PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases, with a restriction to publications from 2020 onward. Different sets of related terms were used as keywords. Eligible articles were original studies written in English and conducted on human subjects. Ten articles that met the eligibility criteria were included, with a total of 4,113 males (1,429 smokers). The reported semen parameters were volume, count, concentration, motility, and morphology. Cigarette smoking has a potential negative impact on semen parameters, including reductions in volume, count, concentration, motility, and normal sperm morphology.
