Exploring perceptions of rhinoplasty in Saudi Arabia - understanding public beauty standards, knowledge, and attitudes

Abstract
Background: Rhinoplasty is the combination of functional and aesthetic characteristics used in patients with congenital defects, traumatic nasal abnormalities, and changes in the patient’s aesthetic appearance. In order to enhance long-term cosmetic outcomes without compromising nasal function, cosmetic rhinoplasty, a common but complex plastic surgery treatment, is continually being improved.
Aim: This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of rhinoplasty in Saudi Arabia, encompassing the understanding of public beauty standards, knowledge, and attitudes.
Methods: A cross-sectional study involved 673 out of 875 participants across Saudi Arabia, between October 2023 and September 2024. The questionnaire was distributed randomly through an online platform, and participants were recruited via popular social media from the general population of Saudi Arabia both male and female participants who are 18 years old and who have not necessarily undergone rhinoplasty. All statistical analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 28.
Results: A majority preferred a straight nose (90.9%) with an upward tip (74.6%), a sharp tip shape (85.3%), narrow nostrils (75.2%), small size (87.5%), and long nose (57.1%). Most study participants, 94.4% have heard of rhinoplasty, with 31.0% knowing its purpose, 24.7% recognizing its functional correction capabilities, and 39.4% understanding it enhances both aesthetics and function. Only 40.6% possess adequate knowledge of rhinoplasty. A slight minority (18.4%) express a desire for rhinoplasty, primarily to improve the appearance of their nose (85.5%). A significant proportion (89.6%) believe it is very important for rhinoplasty patients to be aware of potential complications.
Conclusion: The study revealed notable preferences among participants for specific nasal features, highlighting a societal inclination towards a particular standard of beauty. However, with a moderate awareness of rhinoplasty, there remains a substantial gap in understanding its purpose and potential benefits. This highlights the need for educational campaigns to boost public awareness and understanding of rhinoplasty.
