Metabolic, endocrine and neurocognitive consequences of sleep deprivation: review article

Abstract
Among humans, sleep is one of the most complex yet indispensable biological processes. However, in today’s world, sleep deprivation is becoming increasingly common. This study aimed to investigate how sleep deprivation affects metabolic, endocrine, and neurocognitive functions. A variety of mechanisms link little or disturbed sleep to insulin resistance and/or hyperglycemia. Part of the changes in glucose homeostasis have been attributed to changes in the secretion of counter-regulatory hormones that occur when a person is deprived of sufficient sleep. Several metabolic mechanisms indicated that there could be a substantial statistical association that links the lack of adequate sleep and weight gain. Specific brain areas and networks that are integral to attention and working memory are also significantly influenced by the deprivation of sleep for 24 hours. Notably, it is during sleep that the body clears out waste products, such as amyloid beta. Therefore, the lack of adequate sleep can cause the body to fail to effectively clear out such toxins, further influencing the possible onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD).
