Assessing public awareness about postoperative complications of rhinoplasty in central region of KSA: results of a cross sectional study

Abstract
Objective: To assess public awareness of postoperative rhinoplasty complications among adults residing in the central region of Saudi Arabia.
Subjects and Methods: In the central region of Saudi Arabia, a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out between March and June of 2025. Adults who were 18 years of age or older were included; those who were younger or did not live in the area were not. A validated, self-administered online questionnaire adapted from a previous study was distributed via WhatsApp, X, and Telegram. The survey evaluated knowledge of postoperative problems, rhinoplasty experience and attitudes, and sociodemographic information. Knowledge scores ranged from 0 to 12 and were categorized as good (≥60%) or poor (<60%). Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 26, with significance set at p < 0.05.
Results: A total of 993 individuals participated. Most were ≤30 years (57.4%), female (67.4%), and university educated (58.2%). Only 10% had undergone cosmetic surgery, while 49.6% knew someone who had rhino plasty. The mean knowledge score was 7.13 ± 3.01, with 52.1% demonstrating good awareness. Respiratory disorders (67.2%), nasal obstruction (65.3%), dissatisfaction with nasal appearance (73.5%), and the need for revision surgery (64.2%) were the most commonly recognized complications. Good awareness was significantly associated with female gender, Saudi nationality, and higher education (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: In central Saudi Arabia, there is a moderate level of public awareness regarding complications following rhinoplasty. To increase awareness, educational initiatives and improved preoperative counseling are required.
