Public Awareness and Concerns Regarding the Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Radiology Departments in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia

Abstract
Background: The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into radiology improves diagnostics and efficiency, yet its adoption relies on public acceptance, particularly in specific contexts such as Saudi Arabia. This study assessed public awareness, perceptions, and concerns about AI in radiology within the Western Region of Saudi Arabia.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study of residents of western Saudi Arabia was conducted from April to June 2025. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire on demographics, AI awareness, attitudes, and knowledge in medical imaging. Analyses were performed in SPSS v.26 using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and t-tests, with significance set at p<0.05.
Results: A cross-sectional study of 813 participants revealed a moderate level of overall awareness and a cautiously optimistic attitude. Participants acknowledged potential benefits of AI, such as reduced medical errors (50.1% agreed/strongly agreed) and shorter waiting times (54.5% agreed/strongly agreed). However, they expressed a strong preference for human expertise, especially for communication (61.4% found it very important) and emotional support (53.8% agreed they would feel unsupported with AI results). Significant concerns were noted about data privacy (47.4% agreed/strongly agreed) and autonomous systems. Positive attitudes were significantly associated with being an IT professional and having prior AI experience.
Conclusion: While the Saudi public recognizes the advantages of AI in radiology, notable concerns regarding privacy and a preference for the human element in healthcare persist. These findings underscore the need for comprehensive educational initiatives and a human-centered approach to integrating AI into the Saudi healthcare system.
