Abstract
Objective:
This study aimed to evaluate mothers' knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding vitamin D supplementation for children at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH) in Jeddah.
Methods:
This was a cross-sectional study carried out in the pediatric outpatient clinics of KAUH in 2024 through a self-administered online questionnaire. Mothers of children 12 years and younger were recruited using convenience sampling.
Results:
A total of 383 mothers participated. Most were aged 31–40 years (n=199, 52.0%) with a mean BMI of 27.4 kg/m². The majority had a university-level education (n=250, 65.3%) and were housewives (n=252, 65.8%). Most children (n=254, 66.3%) were younger siblings. Nearly all mothers (n=379, 99.0%) had heard of vitamin D, but only 45.7% identified fortified milk as a source, and 6.3% identified mushrooms. Positive attitude was common, with 60.1% strongly agreeing that supplements are necessary. Knowledge was significantly associated with education (p=0.022) and employment (p=0.002). Younger mothers aged ≤30 years had better attitude (n=65, 81.3%, p<0.001). Practice correlated more strongly with attitude (r=0.306, p<0.001) than knowledge (r=0.134, p=0.009).
Conclusion:
Although awareness of vitamin D was high, knowledge of dietary sources was limited. Younger and educated mothers demonstrated better attitude and practice toward vitamin D supplementation. Attitude was more strongly associated with supplementation practice than knowledge, indicating the need for targeted educational programs to enhance supplementation behaviors.

Key words: Maternal knowledge, maternal practice, maternal attitude, Vitamin D supplementation, child health, pediatric nutrition, preventive health
