Abstract
Objective:
This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude of women in Saudi Arabia toward non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and to identify factors associated with higher knowledge and more positive attitude.
Methods:
A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 435 women using a structured questionnaire assessing sociodemographic characteristics, prior testing experience, knowledge, and attitude toward NIPT. Knowledge and attitude scores were categorized into levels. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify predictors of high knowledge and positive attitudes.
Results:
Most participants were aged 18–35 years (322, 74.0%) and held a bachelor’s degree (290, 66.7%). Prior fetal chromosome analysis was reported by 82 (18.9%). Correct responses were highest for safety (293, 67.4%), sex determination (290, 66.7%), and Down syndrome accuracy (279, 64.1%), while awareness of limitations was lower, including the influence of obesity (85, 19.5%) and false results (132, 30.3%). High knowledge was observed in 211 (48.5%), moderate in 113 (26.0%), and low in 111 (25.5%). Positive attitudes were common, with 289 (66.4%) willing to undergo testing and 307 (70.6%) recommending it. Higher income (adjusted OR=1.419, p=0.010) and prior testing (adjusted OR=15.013, p<0.001) predicted high knowledge, while larger family size reduced positive attitudes (adjusted OR=0.616, p<0.001).
Conclusion:
Women demonstrated good general awareness and strong acceptance of NIPT; however, gaps persisted regarding its limitations. Experience and socioeconomic factors were key determinants. Structured education and counseling are essential to promote informed decision-making and equitable access to prenatal screening.
