Abstract
Background: There is a growing concern that laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) might be associated with an increased incidence of or worsening of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms. In this study, the aim was to estimate the prevalence of pre and postoperative gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) patients, estimate the most important symptoms that GERD patients were complaining about, and compare the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its predictors.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among all patients who underwent a LSG from different regions in Saudi Arabia, using a convenience sampling technique with an online questionnaire.

Results: A total of 390 LSG patients had to participate in this study. 73.8% of cases were not diagnosed, or they didn't have any symptoms of GERD, 14.6% of cases were diagnosed after LSG, and 11.5% were diagnosed before LSG. Among the total, 41.8% of cases showed no symptoms, while, 31.3% of patients were suffering from heartburn. There was a significant relationship between the GERD and smoking (p=0.02), and highly significant relationship with time of LSG and GERD (p<0.001). Among postoperative GERD patients, 19/45(42.2%) were found to be smokers.

Conclusion: In this study, the result showed a highly significant relationship between the time of LSG and GERD, and how smoking could contribute to the presence of GERD postoperatively. We recommend the physicians to educate the patients to quit smoking, pay attention to their meals, and to find a way for their patients to decrease the risk and the severity of GERD symptoms.

Key words: Gastro esophageal reflux disease, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, symptoms, Saudi Arabia.
