A review of depression and help-seeking in Saudi Arabia

Abstract
Depression is a mental disorder that results in persistent low mood and a sense of despair in the suffering individual. It makes an individual feel sad, frustrated, and hopeless, has low self-esteem, and loses interest in things one usually enjoys. There is limited information regarding communities intentions for depressive symptoms in Saudi Arabia. This review article was aimed at evaluating the literature on the attitude of depressive people in Saudi Arabia toward help-seeking. Medical databases were examined thoroughly to explore the eligible articles for inclusion. Twenty-nine articles appeared in the search result. The produced reports were evaluated against the pre-decided inclusion criteria. After reviewing the literature, seven articles were eligible to be included in this review. The included articles were published between 2009 and 2019. The study found help-seeking from qualified, trained healthcare professionals can sometimes save patients lives. More efforts should be done to improve the knowledge of depression symptoms and appropriate sources of help for patients.
