Deep neck infection treatment and prognosis: a systematic review

Abstract
Background: Deep neck infection is the infection of the fascial planes and potential spaces of the neck. Deep neck infection occurs as a result of infection with anaerobic and aerobic bacteria. Such infections come from oral surgical procedures and foreign bodies. Deep neck infection leads to further complications and may be lethal, it is worse in patients with co-morbid diseases. Proper management of deep neck infection is essential for effective recovery. The aim of the study was to determine the best treatment strategy for deep neck infection and its prognosis.
Methodology: An online research process was conducted via PubMed database and Google scholar to obtain articles related to the current subject. We used several keywords for a searching process to obtain all possible articles. We included articles regardless of the design of the study.
Results: We obtained 32 articles. Only 7 articles were included in this systematic review as they met inclusion criteria, and they were of different design ] and published between the years 2015 and 2019. The results were summarized under specific titles in a table.
Conclusion: Treatment should be initiated early for excellent prognosis and fewer complications.
