Awareness of gout disease among adult population in Taif city

Abstract
Background: Gout is the most prevalent form of inflammatory arthritis and is associated with impaired quality of life. Thereby, this study aimed to study the awareness of gout disease among adult population in Taif City along with the study of the level of perception of general population of Saudi Arabia towards gout disease and the relationship between level of awareness and socio-demographic data.
Methodology: The current cross-sectional study was carried out on both genders in Taif City, Saudi Arabia from August 2019 to Nov 2019. Pre-tested, electronic questionnaires were used in data collection, including questions about socio-demographic factors, and level of awareness of gout disease.
Results: Results showed that there was less awareness in single individuals and those who had low income and education level. Majority of the participants were aware about the disease (69.3%). Almost 69.3% participant declared association of the disease with meat consumption. Approximately, 112 (36.96%) participants stated that changing lifestyle, medications and stopping meat intake would be the best treatment for gout disease.
Conclusion: Majority of the participants were aware about gout disease and believed that gout disease is preventable. Also, majority of the participants seemed to have an idea about symptoms and the causes of gout disease.
