Huge mediastinal teratoma: case report and literature review

Abstract
Background: Teratomas are embryonic neoplasms. However, mediastinal tumor in the pediatric age group is uncommon with diverse surgical approaches
Case presentation: In the study, we report a case of a 2-year-old female who has a mediastinal benign mature teratoma that was successfully treated surgically. She presented to the hospital with shortness of breath and fever of 2 days duration. A chest X-ray indicated massive mediastinal masses, The lab result showed a high level of C-reactive protein, and low albumin, while beta- human chorionic gonadotropin and alpha-fetoprotein were within normal limits. Contrast computed tomography (CT) indicated a large peripherally increasing cystic mass. A median sternotomy was performed on the patient without any complications.
Conclusion: Teratomas are true neoplasms composed of tissues from all three germinal layers that occur rarely in the mediastinum. Teratomas can be diagnosed via imaging, such as contrast-enhanced CT. full surgical excision is the recommended course of treatment for mediastinal benign maturity.
