The true estimation of mesial temporal sclerosis cases among King Fahad Medical City, Riyadh

Abstract
Objective: To estimate the number of mesial temporal sclerosis cases based on resonance imaging among temporal lobe epileptic patients.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional retrospective study conducted at King Fahad Medical City (KFMC) among the adult population with epilepsy who underwent MRI scans from January to December, 2022.
Results: A total of 97 patients were included, of which 43.3% had temporal, whereas 30.9% had extra temporal epilepsy. Based on magnetoencephalography/positron emission tomography (MEG/PET), 25.8% had mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS), but based on MRI, 20.6%, 40.2%, and 12.4% had right, left, and bilateral MTS, respectively. There were significant associations between temporal epilepsy and each of MTS (p = 0.0001), left MTS (p = 0.015), emergency medical unit (EMU) admission (p = 0.002), and intensive care unit (ICU) stay (p = 0.048).
Conclusion: Temporal lobe epilepsy was the most common prevalent type among the patients. Based on MRI, MTS was highly prevalent among temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients, especially those with left MTS.
