Knowledge and awareness of gallbladder stones and their complications among the general population in the Jazan Region: a cross-sectional study

Abstract
Objective:
This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and awareness about gallbladder stones and their complications among the general population in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Jazan region from 2024 to 2025, targeting Arabic-speaking adults aged 18 years and above. Data were collected through a self-administered online questionnaire consisting of four sections: socio-demographic details, knowledge of gallbladder stones, and awareness of associated complications.
Results:
Among 502 participants, 74.1% were female, and 69.3% were aged between 18 and 25 years. Most participants were unmarried (66.9%) and held a university degree (70.9%). Of the participants, 32.7% reported a personal history of gallstones, and 21.7% had a family history of the condition. While 63.5% recognized upper right abdominal pain as a symptom and 69.5% identified poor dietary habits as a risk factor, only 35.3% were aware that women were at higher risk. Additionally, just 33.9% acknowledged the importance of physical activity, reflecting a lack of awareness regarding preventive measures.
Conclusion:
The study revealed gaps in knowledge about gallbladder stones among adults in Jazan, particularly regarding gallbladder function, treatment options, and complications. These findings underscore the need for targeted educational initiatives to improve public awareness and promote healthier lifestyles, potentially reducing the prevalence and impact of gallbladder disease.
