Barriers and factors affecting participation in colorectal cancer screening among the adult population of Al-Qassim

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to assess the barriers to colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in the Al-Qassim region.
Methods: To investigate the barriers to CRC screening in the Al-Qassim region, quantitative observational cross-sectional research was established using a self-administered electronic questionnaire. The survey was open to all Arabic-speaking individuals aged 51 years and older. The survey contained 11 multiple-choice questions in Arabic.
Results: The study included 500 participants, the largest proportion (37.6%) aged 51-55 years, and males represented more than one-half of the sample (54.4%). The most reported barriers by the participants included the inconvenience of the test (65.2%), embarrassment during the test (64.6%), and lack of reminders (64.2%). There was a significant correlation between marital status and barriers reported (p-value=0.002).
Conclusion: There were several barriers reported by the participants affecting their participation in CRC screening. Marital status of the subjects influenced the reported barriers.
