Clinical characteristics of pediatrics with testicular torsion: a retrospective chart review from a single Center in Saudi Arabia

Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of pediatric testicular torsion (TT) in a specific regional population.
Subjects and Methods: This retrospective study analyzed chart reviews from pediatric patients who underwent surgery for TT in Al-Jouf Hospitals between 2017 and 2022. Data on age, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, surgical approach, and complications were gathered and analyzed statistically.
Results: The study included 28 patients with an average age of 10.2 ± 5.74 years. About 25% of the patients presented with right TT, 28.6% with left TT, and 46.4% with no-TT. A significant number of patients presented with testicular pain (75%), and ultrasound examinations revealed decreased testicular vascularity in 25% of cases. Patients with TT were older compared with those without TT (12.3 ± 5.20 vs. 7.73 ± 5.55; p = 0.035),
and a higher proportion of decreased vascularity on ultrasound (46.7% vs. 0%; p = 0.004), respectively. The correlation analysis indicated a moderate positive correlation between age and testicular torsion.
Conclusion: The study highlights age and ultrasound findings as significant factors in diagnosing pediatric TT. Despite limitations like its retrospective nature and focus on a regional population, the study contributes to the understanding of TT in children and emphasizes the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment.
