Impact of an educational intervention on knowledge of human papillomavirus vaccination among parents and adult women in Saudi Arabia

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of an educational intervention on Human Papillomavirus (HPV)-related knowledge among parents and young women in Saudi Arabia.
Methods: The study included two groups (parents and adult women; n=526) who took an online questionnaire and watched an animated video as an educational intervention. This study assessed sociodemographic background, HPV knowledge (0 to 100%, pre- and post), HPV vaccine knowledge, and attitude.
Results: Adult women represented 278/526 (52.85%), while parents represented 47.15% of the study sample. Only <6% of participants received HPV vaccination. The most common source of HPV information among the study sample was social media (34%), followed by healthcare providers (19.2%). For both knowledge and attitude, adult women commonly showed significantly better status. Post-intervention, among all included participants, knowledge level improved from 29% at baseline to 43.3% (p-value=<0.001). Being a parent (compared to the adult women group) was independently associated with poor knowledge. At baseline, the parents group demonstrated a 13.28% poorer knowledge but were predicted to benefit more from knowledge interventions with a 7.73% greater improvement vs. adult women (p-value=0.008).
Conclusion: The current study showed a poor level of knowledge of HPV among both adult women and parents in Saudi Arabia. While parents showed significantly worse knowledge levels, benefited from the video intervention more than adult women. Interventions aiming to improve the knowledge level should consider the utilization of physician-delivered content on social media as a source of communication.
