Perceptions and practices toward eye injuries first aid among the general population in Al-Baha Region, Saudi Arabia

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) for first-aid handling of eye injuries among the general population of Al-Baha, Saudi Arabia.
Methods: This study used a verified, organized questionnaire disseminated electronically by Al-Baha residents. The questionnaire included sociodemographic information, knowledge of eye injury first-aid, and practices in hypothetical injury situations.
Results: In total, 414 participants were included. Among them, only 36.2% showed good first-aid knowledge of eye injuries, and 63.8% had poor knowledge. Women had much better knowledge than men (p<0.05). Better knowledge positively correlated with higher education levels (p<0.001). Surprisingly, those without a history of eye injury fared better on the knowledge tests than did those with past injuries. Although the majority of participants could accurately identify emergency symptoms, many had incorrect beliefs about suitable first-aid measures, especially for eye injuries caused by chemicals or foreign bodies.
Conclusion: This study found inadequate knowledge and variable practices in eye injury first aid in the Al-Baha region. Although some people were aware of symptoms, misunderstandings persisted. To prevent unnecessary vision loss, community knowledge must be improved, and appropriate first-aid reactions should be promoted through focused public health campaigns and educational initiatives.
