Awareness, knowledge, and behavior of the general population regarding skin cancer, sun-related hazards, and sunscreen use in the Western Region

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and adherence to preventive measures for skin cancer among the general population in the western region of Saudi Arabia, providing insights to improve awareness and promote effective preventive strategies.
Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study collected data from 640 individuals, representing the general population of the western region of Saudi Arabia. An online questionnaire was administered, and electronic consent was obtained. A comprehensive data analysis was conducted to explore the characteristics, perspectives, and knowledge of the population.
Results: The findings revealed limited awareness among participants, with only 54.1% recognizing the protective effects of sunscreen against skin cancer. Furthermore, uncertainty regarding the adverse effects of excessive sun exposure and the importance of using sunscreen was observed with at least a sun protection factor of 30. Participants’ attitudes toward sunscreen use varied, with common reasons for non-use including laziness, perceived lack of necessity, and affordability concerns.
Conclusion: This study underscores the urgent need for educational campaigns to enhance awareness, dis pel misconceptions, and promote consistent sun protection behaviors in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Addressing these gaps can significantly reduce the incidence of skin cancer, leading to improved skin health outcomes and the overall well-being of the population.
